Playing Age and Pitching

Participation level are placed based on "Playing Age".  The age of a baseball player is determined by their age as of May 1st of a given year. And the age of a softball player is determined by their age as of January 1st.  This date represents the average start date of the Spring Season and is used to form Spring and Summer teams.

Fall Ball is based on the age of the player as of September 1. Please note, the league may make exceptions to placement based on extreme circumstances. An example of this would be a parent specifically requesting an older player to "play down" due to having never played before or skill level.

Additionally, Nonnewaug Baseball and Softball adheres to the strict pitching guidelines to as defined by Cal Ripken Baseball.

Move-up Policy:

A parent may request that their child move up in a division when they would normally stay in the age appropriate division if there is a safety concern. This request will be reviewed by the Competition Committee of the Board.

Spring

Tee- Ball Division (ages 4-6):

Description: The first step in a young player’s baseball journey where players begin to develop core foundational skills needed as they progress through the different levels of the Cal Ripken league.

What to Expect: Tees are utilized to gain familiarity with hitting. Fundamentals of throwing, catching, and base running utilizing basic techniques. Practices are normally structured around “stations” that focus on foundational skill development. Practices and games are often combined and shared between two teams. The first half hour is focused on the skills stations (throwing, base running, hitting, and catching), while the second half of the hour is a “simulated game” – the entire lineup hits each inning and players are moved around defensively to give everyone a feel for the positions. Practices are held on the weekdays and games are typically held on Saturday mornings.

Equipment: Children need to have their own glove for playing Tee Ball. Baseball Caps and Shirts are provided at the start of the season. Baseball pants and cleats are not required but are better alternatives than sneakers and jeans/sweatpants. Nonnewaug Youth Baseball & Softball provides all other equipment. Players are welcome to bring any personal gear, but bats must adhere to the current standards here. (Use link - https://www.baberuthleague.org/bat-rules.aspx)

8U Travel Baseball

A formal evaluation process will be held in May from baseball talent in the greater Woodbury/Bethlehem area. Applicants must attend a designated tryout for their approved age group. Roster spots are not guaranteed and must be earned year to year. Tryouts are conducted by impartial evaluators who do not have a player in the age group to help ensure a fair and equitable experience for all participants.

Rosters are submitted by the Travel Baseball Director and require the approval by the Nonnewaug Youth Baseball & Softball President prior to announcement. Once approved, a Player/Parent Agreement is distributed to players and parents. Acceptance of the roster spot along with a non-refundable registration deposit is required to secure a spot on the team.

Teams may also select alternates for their rosters. An alternate player is one who will be eligible to participate in all off-season training but is not considered part of the regular playing roster. Alternate players become eligible to join the playing roster for any one game or for the remainder of the season if other players on the regular roster are unavailable.

Teams will participate in a competitive league against other towns in the general area. Travel to games will generally be minimal however some could result in a 30-50 minute travel distance. A playoff system will be established based on overall record. Games will begin in the middle of June and playoffs will occur during the last week of July.

The registration fee per team reflects all costs to run that team which includes uniforms and other apparel, umpires, applicable field usage fees, unless specifically excluded. Alternate players will be asked to pay a reduced registration fee to cover the cost of training and a uniform.

Players need to have their own glove for playing on the 8u Travel Team. Jerseys and hats are provided at the start of the season. Baseball pants and cleats (molded plastic) are required. At this age, most players are bringing their own helmets, bats, and catching gear (for those kids playing the position). Players are welcome to bring any personal gear, but bats must adhere to the current standards here. (Use link - https://www.baberuthleague.org/bat-rules.aspx)

If there are enough kids for more than one team at each grade, then teams will be split evenly for balance.

What to Expect: Practices and home games are played at Hollow Park fields. There will also be games against other neighboring towns so we can provide competitive games. Various rules are adjusted as the kids advance in division level to keep games balanced and fair. Practices are usually held during the week, with games on the weekends.
